Interviewed by a BA HONS Journalism student

I was interviewed this morning by a good friend of mine Daniel Newham who is a 1st year BA HONS in Journalism student. It was a great interview and I’m very impressed by the outcome. By far the best write up of an interview I’ve taken part in so far. Here’s the full article:

An ex-student who had his college course cruelly cancelled is now reaping the rewards as his web development company rakes in £2,000pm.

Jamie Huskisson, of Clifton in Nottingham was studying an FDa in Multimedia at the City campus of New College Nottingham when they announced that they were cancelling the third year of his course.

The news reached them a week before the end of the second year, so they didn’t have much time to make other plans.

Sensibly, Huskisson didn’t panic, he knew he already knew enough and he joined a number of freelance web developer Internet forums, making acquaintances that would prove to be vital in getting him off the ground.

Simply by putting his name about he had found himself with 2-3 months worth of work, earning over £1,500 in the process. Suddenly it seemed like this could be a career path rather than temporary respite.

Having previously worked for hugely popular tutorial indexing website, Pixel2Life (www.pixel2life.com), Huskisson soon found that his reputation was preceding himself and when introducing himself to clients, he would find that a good number would already know who he was!

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing. Huskisson himself admits to having had doubts: “I didn’t know whether I was able to do it, after being at Pixel2Life so long I’d grown so used to having things handed to me so it was a test of sorts on whether I could stand on my own. 6 months later I’m pretty sure that’s the case!”

As the interest starts to rise, the business continues to flow and so does the money. 6 months after his course was cruelly cancelled, it’s ironic that he is now earning upwards of £2,000 per month doing precisely what they would have been teaching him anyway.

He explained to me why he enjoys the work so much: “I love it. It’s rewarding to see a month or two of nine until five work come out in a website that tens of thousands of people will use and call their home for 10-20 minutes of the day.”

Speaking about his new website (www.jhuskisson.com), Huskisson sounded enthusiastic about it’s future:

“It’s a place to keep up to date with what I’m doing and even enquire about hiring me for your project or business. I love interacting with my audience and love posting up so they have something to read everyday.”

So what lies next for Jhuskisson on the information superhighway?

“I’m hoping to get the company going, with offices and the whole sha-bang. I’m looking to gain a few contacts I can trust locally so I can start a full business and have a team of us do the jobs that are given.”

All this has been achieved in 6 months by a man holding modest qualifications but a burning desire to succeed. It goes to show that if you’re committed enough and don’t give up on a dream, you really can go on to do what you want.
