JHuskisson 2.5
It’s not exactly a version 2.5 but we may as well stick with whatever Wordpress version I’m using instead of counting the exact amount of times I’ve changed around this site. It just makes things easier. (Update: WP 2.5.1 released four seconds after making the site live, good timing).
I had David over at Rolled put together this design about a month ago based on one of Nofie Iman’s free Wordpress themes that I ran into when looking for a temporary refresh. The design will change over time, and it is planned that it will be added to as time progresses but for the moment this is the clean slate that I am to start again with.
Some interesting numbers that I’ve noticed whilst paying attention to the site properly over the past week or so. I’ve just hit 1,100 comments on posts from users and over 28,000 have been blocked via Akismet in comparison. I’ve also seen my subscribers number hit above 150, and hope to see this rise further the more I post up.
Things are moving forward on a significant amount of things in the background that I’ll be posting up about, but in short it mostly means I should be able to post much more freely in the future without worrying too much. I hope to be able to talk about the changes from freelancing to small business, how I coped with it and how I should have done it differently so that people doing the same may benefit.
I’m going to release this design as a free Wordpress theme in a few weeks, along with a Wordpress plug-in or two that I’ve put together. I also have some Code Igniter helpers/libraries and Expression Engine modules/plug-ins that I hope to be documenting online. So lots of releases all round.
For now, enjoy poking around the new layout and feel free to follow me to Twitter or any other social networking app you may be using. I’ve taken the time to list a few of my profiles I have around the net on my contact page.

Today’s a good day
Today is one of those days where I wake up and say to my life ‘this is a good day’.
I’ve been extremely busy lately finishing off two or three projects and talking a lot about a new one and last night I was up till just before 2am finishing off the last of those projects. The rush of finishing a project because you want to see it work beas the rush of finishing a project because you need a money any day of the week in my opinion, and this was one of those nights.
Things are also improving in the clientel area with daily work enquiries and with an inheritance of several great clients coming up from a good friend of mine - things are only looking better and better. Add to that a possiblity of a cheap MacBook so I can change my working location around now and again too and I’m even happier, not to mention the possibility of moving to a new place of living fairly soon.
The enquiries for the PHP freelancing helper position were simply outstanding and I’ve not had time to go reply to any just yet, but I’ll more than likely do this on Sunday. Whilst I’m on the subject there’s a little tip for a couple of the guys who applied who probably won’t get replies from me - two sentences won’t ever get you hired.
I’m also looking for some more good freelance designers on my contact list if anyone wants to get in touch.
LOST is good, Prison Break is good, House is good, 24 is good, Jericho is dead and buried (it has until the end of the season to redeem itself) and I’ve found a new show ‘The Black Donnellys’ thanks to a friend of mine which had the best pilot episode I’ve ever watched.
Oh, and the 10,000 gamer points achievement goal was broken last weekend due to a weekend off ;)

New characters and some humour added to the layout
First off - i’ve added some new versions of myself to the top header, these will appear on work, goals, articles and contact pages. So in posts in related categories, sub pages of those categories and the main pages themselves.
I’ve also added four rotating banners to advertise my RSS feed. I felt the layout was really missing some of my humour and these help me get it accross much much better. I’ll be changing the characters/adding more later down the line but these are the first four at the moment:
Edit - four more added in a whirl of photoshopping:

JHuskisson.com launched :)
Well here we are, a new beginning yet again. Now - where to begin… there’s plenty of things to go through…
Completely revamped portfolio. With all my previous projects that I could get a hold of (there are still a couple I’m actively pursuing), testimonials from clients I’ve worked with (actively pursuing there too), nice thumbnail images for everyone and nice detailed explanations. Full screenshots of ‘dead’ projects and pages for each one will be coming soon - so that you can fully access each piece of work if you choose too. I’ve also got a few hundred screenshots of every site on the portfolio to put up so that you get the full feel of everyone of the projects - dead or alive.
Expanded categories set. These allow me to be more flexible in my posting and allow me to post better things more regularly. You’ll notice there’s twenty or so active categories at the moment, but there’s around 4-5 that are currently empty that will be coming up too. I’ve also broken down my articles into sub-categories so that once I’m regularly writing them they’ll be easily to navigate.
Newly reformed goals. Now I have a new list of goals for the year of 2007 (albeit roughly the same, though including new goals to replace older completed ones). You can now also make a comment of support on the goals page if you choose to do so. It’s mostly a novelty but it’s something people send me and I thought it’d be nice to make it public.
Contact me anyway you want. I’ve reformed the contact page so that it now contains multiple methods to get in touch with me. Want to add me on MSN? my address is there.. AIM? GTalk? Yahoo Messenger? Skype? all there… Voice message? there.. Xbox Live? yup, there too. I’m very open to visitors talking to me about jobs etc. and I want to make it as easy as possible for visitors to do so. Some may call me crazy but hey, since when have I been one to go along with the norm?
Articles listing. Now there’s a dedicated page I’ll be saddened by looking at how empty it looks and I’ll be writing them more often. It also tells people how to request new articles (though obvious) - which helps.
Bookmarked Twod?. That’s fine, over 180 re-directs have been setup to move you to the proper location on JHuskisson.com so you don’t miss a single post :)
Something to read? I’ve made ten or so posts before launch, just so you guys have something more to do ;)
Things still to come..
- Professional invoicing. Gilles is in the process of designing a custom invoice template and a new business card to create the perfect new work identity to match the site.
- Detailed ‘case reports’ on each portfolio job, with full screenshots of all dead sites
- Skype voicemail integration for the contact page so you can leave voice messages
- New comic characters by the genius that is Richard Shilling
- Regular posts on various tingly subjective topics
- Regular articles using my experience to guide newbies and oldies through new things
New design credit goes completely to the talented Belgian that is Gilles Mae.

10,000 Akismet spam caught on Twod
Just about to move over from Twod.co.uk and noticed that I just reached the 10,000 spam comments caught by Akismet :) Great!

Fun fact: It took JHuskisson.com as little as 3 minutes upon the site being opened to be hit with it’s first spam comment.

JHuskisson.com launching tomorrow :)
Tomorrow will see JHuskisson.com finally launch after 2-3 months of designer troubles (still waiting for a refund, actually..) and a massive busy period for me.
I’ve ported over every file, every image, every post and every comment. And I’ll move this post over just before launch along with any comments. I’ve also restored every dead image apart from roughly 2-3 (and from 160 posts, that’s impressive).
I’ll be setting up redirects from this domain for every post, page and index (but not images). So make sure you check the site tomorrow night/Monday morning :)
Oh and for the people complaining about the ‘No more idiots’ message on the domain… idiots will be re-allowed from tomorrow.

JHuskisson.com hopefully ready for the new year..
Now that design work is finally underway (which should be done for the 23rd) I could finally have the domain ready. Expect a more professional blog, regular posts/discussions and weekly or bi-weekly articles written by me on programming, business, marketing, freelancing, flash, css/xhtml, blogging, wordpress, SEO and numerous other topics that are stacked into my brain.
Expect movie reviews, book reviews and an updated goals list for the 2007 year. Any requests for book reviews or articles on a specific topic? Feel free to post them in the comments, as I’ll be writing articles ready to publish when the new site goes live :)
