Rolled acquired by Juno Media
I’ve just announced over on Sausage Roll that Rolled has been acquired by Juno Media.
It’s an opportunity to join an established company in the area with a good solid set of existing clients and revenue. Carers Federation and The Coffee Fairy are the two favourites that I’ve worked on so far, being the social entrepreneurs that they are.
There’s also a big opportunity to change the company from the inside into taking on board blogs, RSS feeds, open source, “web 2.0″, web apps, social entrepreneurialism and all those other “modern” things we’ve been doing at Rolled in the past. Myself and Dave (owner/director of Juno Media) have sat down and formulated a plan of attack for this and have already started applying it to new clients.
It also means you should see me at conferences from now on, which I was unable to do at Rolled due to lack of excess funds. We’ve already started by attending the fantastic SHINE unConference on the 9th of May.
Of course, a regular wage and lack of business-induced stress is also a big plus. With weekends off and work ending at 5:30pm everyday - it’s going to be completely different from the twelve hour work days and seven day workweeks I worked at Rolled as Managing Director.
Here’s to, yet again, a new stage in my life.

Rolled launches official blog Sausage Roll
My company Rolled Limited launched our official blog recently. This means that JHuskisson.com will go back to my opinion and articles on freelancing/general issues and Sausage Roll will become the official company blog about client launches, job openings, hostile company take overs and occasionally, articles that will help our clients and/or companies like ourselves.
Changes are on going at Rolled and we have several great announcements over the next 1-3 months as we develop into a tighter team, establish our new brand and client services. Don’t hesistate to subscribe to the Sausage Roll RSS feed to get instant updates, or subscribe via e-mail for a morning e-mail after we post anything up.

Wanted: UK WordPress developer, UK Front-end developer

Before frustrated subscribers ask - yes, they’ll be a dedicated Rolled.at blog for this stuff eventually. I figured I’d post it up here as I’ve always received replies and better people as a result of posting here rather than on job boards.
I’m looking to bring a Wordpress developer and a Front-end developer for the team. We have a constant stream of Wordpress development and are looking to work with someone based in the UK. He or she must have:
- A sense of humour, and a love for Wordpress
- A love for a good sausage roll (the food - someone explained to me the other day it’s a very bizarre sexual position, but let’s not get into that now)
- Inside and out knowledge of the Wordpress template system
- A knowledge of too many plug-ins to count
- Ability to search or even build a plug-in to suit a specific need
- Ability to solve problems rather than create them
- Set pricing on a job-by-job basis, or a monthly fee to keep you on full-time
- Ability to manage and meet several deadlines. Perfect knowledge of English (I’m looking for UK based people here) and someone who can communicate with clients via IM or e-mail very well.
For the front-end developer position I’m looking for:
- A sense of humour, and a love for CSS/XHTML
- Ability to create XHTML Strict code in any situation, without falling back to Transitional
- Ability to produce hack-less CSS compatible with IE6, FireFox 1-2, Safari and Opera
- Ability to go further back in the browser time-machine if neccesary
- Ability to re-write existing terrible ‘want to slap the person who did it, table based’ code into ‘nice and pretty’ mark-up
- Ability to manage and meet several deadlines. Perfect knowledge of English (I’m looking for UK based people here) and someone who can communicate with clients via IM or e-mail very well.
If I fail to receive a application by Monday-Wednesday (depending on when I have time), I will post it around several job boards instead. Applicants should format their e-mails to me as such:
- Hi, I’m -x- from -x- and I love Sausage Rolls.
- Here is why you should hire me: -bullet pointed list-
- Here is my rough set per-job pricing and/or my monthly/weekly hiring fee should you want to choose between the two
- Here’s what I can bring to Rolled which no-one else can
- I love you man! -x- (Ok this one is optional)
Looking forward to seeing what I get in my inbox Monday morning.

O Designer, Where Art Thou?

I (and Rolled) are looking to bring in a designer we can use on all our design work, from designing the Rolled site and internal client management system to working directly with our extensive client portfolio, with some household names awaiting us appointing someone for the position.
We need someone in the UK or Europe, possibly willing to communicate with clients directly over the phone, input ideas, deliver wireframes and initial rough ideas quickly and provide us with a range of design styles from ‘web 2.0′ to clean and minimalist. We also need someone who can take an existing brand and create a site using that brand’s logo and colour scheme easily over an existing base.
The role involves a huge workload and will be more than likely heading towards a full-time position in the future. If you currently run your own design company or work as a freelancer we are happy to take on board any existing clients and have them deal directly with you. There is also a possibility that clients will want a designer present at meetings - in which case Rolled will cover all expenses involved. We don’t wish to ‘partner’ with any company or group of individuals - we strictly want this to remain within Rolled.
The role is urgent and needs to be filled with a week or two at most. So send any examples of your work, why you would like to work for Rolled and why you think you’d be a good fit - and some rough pricing information to jay@rolled.at if you are interested.

New Rolled At teaser page, new direction
Today we have a new teaser page for Rolled At with some more information on our offered services upon launch, a view of our logo and something with a much needed designer touch on top of the original done by myself.
The next launch of ours will be the official blog where we can finally start talking about our clients and where staff can post up articles in their given area. We will also have special offers now and again whilst talking about our client and product launches of which we have some very special things to say. It will also give us somewhere to post up some progress on the actual site.
We are also actively seeking more PHP/mySQL developers who love what they do, and will be seeking Flash developers in the near future. Again - the blog will allow us to advertise these openings properly.

Rolled.at looking to expand once again
I’m gearing up the start of a recruitment drive for Rolled.at where there are a mass amount of opportunities for both starting and established developers. We work primarily in PHP/mySQL but are starting to see requests for ASP.NET, C++/C#, Python and Ruby on Rails. We are also in need of web designers.
The prices we charge depend on the people quoting for the particular job and we require everyone to have a instant messaging contact address for initial enquiries. Whether you charge very little or a lot - we are interested in speaking to you about opportunities Rolled.at can offer.
I can’t stress enough at this point that agencies should not bother applying and that we are only looking for English speaking people in the US/Canada, Great Britain, Europe or Australia.
Rolled.at isn’t a tied down contract and you are free to work for yourself on any other projects that may come along. We require non-disclosure agreements for all projects during the development/design process and expect freelancers to be able to self-manage the projects given to them to an extent.
We are looking for people with any of the following
- Experienced PHP developers for large jobs, and young developers looking to become established by doing smaller jobs and working their way up
- Deep CSS/XHTML knowledge, with the ability to code PSD’s or PNG’s into XHTML Strict and CSS valid layouts
- Experience with vBulletin or Invision Power Board, modding or skinning
- WordPress, Expression Engine or Movable Type experience
- Established web designers
- People with experience in ASP.NET, C++, C# or Ruby
- People with experience with frameworks such as CakePHP, Code Igniter or RailsIf you have any of these qualities and are interested in being handed work on a freelance basis - feel free to send an e-mail over to jay@rolled.at with some details about yourself and what it is you can do - and your availability for any work.

Announcing Rolled At
Today I’m pleased to announce Rolled At, an organisation of quality and passionate freelancers gathered by myself. The aim of the organisation is to expand offering only my own PHP development services at JHuskisson.com and is made up entirely of freelancers who love what they do, what they produce and have a history of delivering a quality product to their client.
I maintain a very high quality bar for freelancers at Rolled At in order to make sure the client receives exactly what they’ve paid for. If a client isn’t happy or a freelancer misses a deadline they simply aren’t used for any further projects. This is done to ensure quality level for future projects and to maintain client happiness in the long term.
A temporary page has been put up at Rolled.at for the moment whilst plans for branding, the web site and client servicing apps are thoroughly thought out.
There are some exciting things in the pipeline and some excited freelancers waiting to start work for clients. So get in touch for a quote and get something rolled at you today.
