New Naruto Central launched!

I’ve just finished a good hard job over at NarutoCentral.com and it’s now (4am..) up and running for everyone to see at NarutoCentral.com

I’ll write a more detailed case study later on with the jhuskisson.com release .. but the main differences between the old coding system and the one I have built are:

  • You’ll now stay logged in when you login
  • Spam control on private messaging, commenting and contact form
  • No ads for premium members
  • All new gold downloads system featuring a complex caching infrastructure
  • All new gold downloads payment system (No need to activate your membership, and you can now buy for a friend – not to mention feel safe your payment will be processed).
  • You can now retrieve you password
  • Queryless in comparison coding design – moving from a system that used on some pages 50-100 queries (don’t ask how), this new system uses roughly two on average a page
  • CSS/XHTML layout – alot of the content has been moved towards a new standard based backbone. Over 100 pages of content moved over by hand
  • Better URLs – they read like a book
  • Private messaging system that works – multiple fixes and checks to make it work the way it was meant to work originally
  • Massively overhauled admin system for improved efficiency and getting things done

There’s alot more changes that aren’t coming to mind at the moment that i’ll attatch later on as they come to me.

It’s been a fantastic project to work on and I thank Tom for the brilliant opportunity to work on his community. I look forward to seeing the site flourish now that it’s all working how it should – and hope to see the number two Naruto site on the net become number one :)

(‘Work for an Anime site’ goal achieved, hands down)

  1. Nice one Jay, this is a great achievement :D

  2. “see the number two Naruto site on the net become number one :)”

    – Lol yea right.

    Good luck :P

  3. Setting high goals is how you get somewhere in life Jared ;) remember that :)

  4. Fair point Jay, fair point.

So are you working there full time now? What do they pay you, if you dont mind me asking?

  5. I’m freelance Jared – i’ll be starting my next job on the 27th :) And I was paid a single fee spread over the time it took me to complete the site.

in the mean time i’ve got a nice holiday in Lanzarote to look forward to and some nice free time to spend with my girlfriend.

  6. Your Next Job will be over at Advance-Gamers sometime in 2007,look forward to it:)

  7. thnx a bunch Jay =)

  8. Cognrats.

    Didn’t that cross out
Complete a job that pays over $2500

    ?

  9. nice work dude

  10. Great job. But from browsing narutocentral, it seems to me that a job like dosent come out to cost $2500. I couldve done that for about $100!

  11. No sunset it doesn’t, I was given a very relaxed deadline so the price wasn’t as high as $2500.

That said – my next job cracks that goal.

James – a lot of people could’ve done the job for $100 but they would have produced just that – a $100 job. Which was the problem I was fixing in the first place :)

  12. lol, 100 usd for that? you must be either really desperate for some pocket change or have way too much time on your hands.

thats the problem these days – too many people willing to do big jobs for shit money and dont put the time or effort in that the job needs, ending in crap results. all it does is either a)leave a big mess for a real coder too clean up down the line when it falls to bits or b) keep real coders who wont work for peanuts out of a job!

  13. Im not trying to bash anyone, but seriously from viewing the website- it honestly was NOT worth 2500usd. Seriously.

The memberscript is called the AR memberscript, and after viewing narutocentral, it still seems as if there were no modifications at all.

and yes, i was saying 100usd and i admit i was exaggerating. maybe 500 max. i mean the things you listed up there that were ‘improvements’ couldve been easily fixed by simple PHP coding. thats all im saying.

  14. Nice job Jay!

Where are you going to be working? I’ve been gone for the greater part of the month and don’t remember you saying anything about a new job. Good Luck!

  15. Hey James – the script is not AR memberscript at all. This is a completely custom job to move away from a very insecure and un-scaling script.

We could have fixed the script yes, but all it would cause further down the line is more ‘hacking’ at the script making it worse and worse – so the decision was to re-code it entirely and bring the site up to stratch and independant of any bugs that may be lurking around in scripts such as AR. :)

David – I’ll post up about my new job soon don’t worry :)
